Water Quality Concerns and Health Impacts
It is essential to understand what it means when you have contaminants in your drinking water. You need to know the risks and concerns, and to name a few:
Total Coliform Bacteria
Coliforms are naturally occurring bacteria used as indicators of potential contamination. Their presence in more samples than allowed suggests possible issues with water safety.
Fecal Coliform / E. coli
These bacteria indicate contamination from human or animal waste. Exposure can cause short-term health effects such as diarrhea, nausea, cramps, and headaches. Infants, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are at greater risk.
Arsenic
Long-term consumption of water with high arsenic levels may lead to skin damage, circulatory issues, and an increased risk of cancer.
Copper
While essential in small amounts, excessive copper can cause gastrointestinal distress in the short term and liver or kidney damage over time. Individuals with Wilson’s Disease should consult a physician.
Lead
Lead exposure is harmful at any level. In children, it can reduce IQ and attention span and worsen behavioral issues. In adults, it may increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and kidney or nervous system problems. Pregnant women and their unborn children are especially vulnerable.
Nitrate & Nitrite
Infants under six months are particularly at risk. High levels can cause serious illness or death, with symptoms like shortness of breath and "blue baby syndrome."
Manganese
Although manganese is a necessary nutrient, high levels can cause neurological and cognitive issues in infants and children, along with staining and a metallic taste in water.
Sodium
While not harmful at low levels, high sodium can affect taste, harm certain plants, and increase water corrosivity, potentially damaging plumbing.
Iron
Not typically a health risk, but high iron levels can cause:
- Staining of laundry and fixtures
- Metallic taste
- Discoloration of water (yellow, orange, or reddish hues)
Radon
Radon in water can contribute to cancer risk, especially stomach cancer. It can also be released into the air during household activities, increasing inhalation exposure.
Uranium
Long-term exposure to uranium in drinking water may increase the risk of cancer and kidney toxicity.
Hard Water
Though not a health hazard, hard water can dry out skin and hair, worsen skin conditions, and reduce the efficiency of appliances due to mineral buildup.
pH Levels
The pH of water affects taste, odor, and the potential for pipe corrosion. Maintaining a balanced pH is important for both health and plumbing integrity.
Sulfate
High sulfate levels can cause a rotten egg or musty odor and a bitter taste. While unpleasant, they are not known to pose health risks.
Chloride
Excess chloride can give water a salty taste, harm plants, and increase corrosivity, potentially damaging plumbing systems.
PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)
PFAS exposure above recommended levels may affect pregnancy outcomes, child development, immune and endocrine systems, and organs such as the liver, kidneys, and thyroid. Some studies link PFAS to increased risks of kidney and testicular cancer. Alternative water sources are recommended, especially for pregnant women and infants.
The Solution
We offer the following options available to remove and reduce filtration and mitigation issues:

- Ultraviolet filter -- bacteria
- Water softeners (Cation Resin filters ) -manganese, hardness
- pH neutralizer – lead and copper
- Carbon filters -radon, phas
- Reverse osmosis (RO) filter - phas
- Anion resin filters – phas, arsenic
- Iron removal filters - iron
